Summer Plans
It’s right about this time that many of us in college begin, or start to solidify their plans for the Summer. I have been thinking a lot about what I should do this summer. Whether I wanted to try and get a job, do an internship, sit around and relax… However, being someone that truly enjoys working and being productive, I know that I plan on spending my summer doing an internship.
Last year, I did two— The Los Angeles Sparks and Lionsgate Films. They were both incredibly rewarding in different ways. I did a ton of work for the LA Sparks, doing new media and graphics design, even getting to create a short video that was played during the game on the Jumbotron. Lionsgate, was more typical intern work- filing, reorganizing, calling various companies and shipping. I didn’t mind the sometimes mundane work, it was fun and it was in a setting that I plan on pursuing in my future.
This summer, I would really like to begin to focus my work towards what I want to do in life, which is of course producing. I don’t know what that means in terms of finding work, but I think that now that I’ve gained some experience, I will be able to narrow down my choices a little bit. I feel like my dream job (for the summer) is to just be an assistant to a producer - a’la devil wears prada but in the film industry, not the fashion industry. I truly feel that that’s the best way to gain the experience that I want. I don’t really want to be stuck in an office 24/7- but I certainly wouldn’t mind office time. And I think that I’ve also discovered that I really like working with films that are in progress— and less on films that are being released on DVD and have already had their theatrical run. I’ve been spending lots of time revising and editing my resume… cutting it down to just one page, like the Emerson Career Advising Center suggested. Now, all I need to do is begin looking seriously.
We’ll see where my journey takes me, but I’m optimistic and I really can’t wait to be back in the LA sun this summer working.
